For Better or for Worse . . .

Each Soul is the Bride of Christ

***Today with Julian – September 16th:

And this hath ever been a comfort to me,
that I chose Jesus to my Heaven,
by His grace, in all this time of Passion and sorrow;
and that hath been a learning to me
that I should evermore do so:
choose only Jesus to my Heaven
in well and in woe.

(Mother Julian, Chapter XIX)

That I should choose Jesus, for better or for worse. It sounds like a marriage, does it not? And it is: each human soul is the Bride of Christ. Each Christian soul recognizes and assents to this mystical union – for better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health; to have and to hold, to love and to cherish . . . and thus Christ and I shall never be parted, even through death. As in any earthly marriage, there is joy and pain, well and woe, triumph and defeat, happiness and sorrow in this mystical union with Christ. And there is a choosing every day to remain committed to this marriage – “that I should evermore do so,” Julian realizes, “choose only Jesus to my Heaven, for better or worse.”
